Indications:
Penicillin VK potassium is indicated in the treatment of mild to moderately severe infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to penicillin G within the serum levels achievable by this oral dosage form. Therapy should be guided by bacteriologic studies (including susceptibility tests) and clinical response.
Note: Severe conditions such as pneumonia, empyema, bacteremia, pericarditis, meningitis, and arthritis should not be treated with Penicillin VK during the acute stage. Surgical procedures should be performed when indicated.
The following infections will usually respond to an adequate dosage of Penicillin VK:
Dosage:
The dosage of Penicillin VK potassium should be determined based on the susceptibility of the causative microorganism, the severity of the infection, and the patient's clinical response.
For adults and children 12 years and older, the usual dosage recommendations are as follows:
Precautions & Warnings:
Penicillin should be used with caution in individuals with histories of significant allergies and/or asthma. The oral route of administration should not be relied upon in patients with severe illness, nausea, vomiting, gastric dilation, cardiospasm, or intestinal hypermotility.
Occasionally, patients may not absorb therapeutic amounts of orally administered penicillin.
In streptococcal infections, therapy must be sufficient to eliminate the organism (a minimum of 10 days); otherwise, sequelae of streptococcal disease may occur. Cultures should be taken following completion of treatment to confirm that streptococci have been eradicated.
Prolonged use of antibiotics may promote the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate measures should be taken.
